Mayor Kay Fraser

Our city is primed for growth and prosperity and this week we took the next steps to realising some of this potential with the official start of construction on the Munibung Road extension project.

It has been a while coming, so I was so happy to finally get to turn the first sod on the project with the Hon. Concetta Fierravanti-Wells. It signals the start of the 820m road extension that will link Glendale with Cardiff’s industrial estate, significantly improving connectivity around the City’s northern and western suburbs.

The north-west part of our city offers us a rare opportunity to deliver a major piece of urban development that will create a liveable place for residents and business. The extension of the road is integral to the future development of the area, and it will help unlock business investment, commercial development and housing opportunities, which will support growth in our region. It’s an exciting time for the area and with more than 800 new homes and 20 additional hectares of employment-generating land, identified adjacent to Munibung Road it’s clear to see the benefits the project provides.

It has taken a significant amount of work to get to this point and I want to acknowledge the Australian Government’s patience and the support of the NSW Government to reach a solution. We’re also now working with the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation and interested developers to realise the full potential of this site, now that the ownership of the old Pasminco land has been transferred to the NSW Government.

The project site is now in the hands of local contractor Daracon and I’m very confident that we can deliver the extension of Munibung Road by the middle of next year.

Spotlight on Bennetts Green

I was also thrilled to see the start of construction of the Spotlight group site at Windale/Bennetts Green last week. It’s another exciting development for Lake Macquarie and shows the confidence in our city.

The Spotlight group are investing $100 million in the site at Windale/Bennetts Green, which will see the likes of Spotlight, Anaconda, Nick Scali and more large format retail stores move in once the project is complete and opens in the second half of 2020.

I’m so proud to see the momentum we have as a city. We are blessed with our beautiful location, including our lake and beaches, but it is also wonderful to see our city on the path to reaching our potential. Not only is it great for our local economy, but it also improves our liveability and lifestyle.
