Lake Macquarie City Council will celebrate NAIDOC Week 2019 with a range of community activities from 7-14 July, including the traditional flag raising ceremony at Council’s Administration Building at Speers Point on Wednesday 10 July.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Community Partnerships Manager Andrew Bryant said NAIDOC Week gives our community another opportunity to acknowledge the strong Aboriginal cultural and social heritage that is a feature of Lake Macquarie.
“NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all of us to support our local Aboriginal community and recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island peoples,” Mr Bryant said.
“I encourage the community to get involved in the events planned throughout NAIDOC Week, particularly given this year’s theme – Voice. Treaty. Truth. – is all about working together for a shared future.”
The City’s NAIDOC Week celebrations kick off with a free community event, Westlakes NAIDOC Family Fun Day, at Toronto Foreshore on Tuesday 9 July from 10am-3pm. The event will begin with be peaceful march along The Boulevarde from Toronto Town Square to the foreshore, where there will be live entertainment displays from local service providers, a free community barbecue and the annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award ceremony.
Council will host its annual flag-raising ceremony and morning tea on Wednesday 10 July from 9-11am. The event begins with a traditional Smoking Ceremony outside the Council Chambers and Welcome to Country, followed by cultural performances and guest speakers. This event will also mark the official launch of Council’s Aboriginal Community Plan 2019-2023 ‘Bayikulinan’.
