Be alert and keep watch over your children this summer.
Summer is all about being outdoors, catching up with your loved ones, warm weather and cooling off in the water. While we all enjoy a refreshing dip in a backyard swimming pool, it is important that parents and guardians remain vigilant and keep watch over their children around water. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children 0–4 years of age.
Lake Macquarie City Council encourages pool owners and parents to always actively supervise kids when using the household pool:
- Be prepared – always make sure you have everything ready when going swimming e.g. towels, goggles, dry clothes, drinking water.
- Be close – always be within arm’s reach of your children.
- All of your attention – focus all of your attention on your children and watch, talk and play with them when they are in the water.
- All of the time – never leave your child alone in the or around water, nor should they be left in the care of an older child.
In a City graced with beautiful waterways and great beaches, teaching our children to swim is one of the most essential things we can do.
Lake Mac Swim Centres deliver fun and affordable learn to swim programs that will teach your child the life-long skill of swimming so they can be comfortable, strong and happy in the water. To find out more, visit lakemac.com.au/recreation/swim-centres/programs.
To ensure the safety of family and friends, it is also important for swimming pool owners to have adequate pool safety barriers, including fencing and gates, in place. Council has a progressive swimming pool safety inspection program in place to continue to inspect pools for compliance across the City. We encourage all homeowners with a swimming pool or spa, whether they are permanent, inflatable, demountable or portable pools, to visit lakemac.com.au/development/regulation-and-compliance to learn more about pool safety requirements to ensure they comply.
