Wyee cricketers prepare for action on Saturday

Support for the McGrath Foundation on the cricket field came early this year when the good hearted players and supporters of Wyee and Doyalson Cricket Clubs came together last Saturday in a top of the table clash at Wyee and raised almost $800 in their inaugural Pink Stumps Day.

Wyee secretary Troy Martin said the club had aimed to raise $500. “We smashed that with the Wyee Foodworks BBQ working a treat and the kind donation from LakeMac Today of a framed Steve Waugh photograph from his last Test meaning we were able to raise $797.10 in one afternoon.

“A big shout out to Doylo for getting involved. It was great that one of their players won the raffle!

“We’ll be making it an annual event – hopefully always against Doylo at the last home game before Christmas,” said Troy

On the cricket pitch, first placed Wyee proved too strong for the visitors who are currently in second position on the ladder.

Full match report from the Facebook gallery compiled by Troy Martin:

From the toss (yes, Leon won one), through the partnership between Leon (75) and Phil (32), then the bowling from Leon (3/6 from 5) and Dean 2/8, plus the fielding, 3 catches to keeper Kade, a run out to Stevie and a final catch from Anthony, it was a special day at the Wombats Burrow as we took down 2nd place Doylo (our record now extends to 4 to 1 against our rivals) in a convincing all round display.

Kade and Anthony opened again, while their partnership of 20 doesn’t compare to their other big partnerships, it did exactly what Leon expected, allowing him and Phil to consolidate and take us to drinks with plenty of wickets in hand.

Leon’s last 3 innings have been 41, 61, 40* and now 75. He was composed, hitting the right balls to the boundary, or over it. It was going to be a great birthday for Leon.

We had the luxury of hitting out from overs 25-35, with Dean being not out 11 with the final score of 159.

The bowling would need to be tight as Doylo have one of the best batting lineups. Craig, and in particular, Anthony, bowled some very good balls, but it wasn’t until Leon came on that we stifled the runs and took consistent wickets. At drinks Doylo was 5/80 and the rain they were waiting for just wasn’t going to help them. Dean and Simon finished off the tail. Doylo all out for 110.

A huge thank you to Annie for the wonderful BBQ to finish off the first Pink Stumps Day!
