P-plater detected more than 45km/h over while using mobile phone

A p-plate driver has been detected travelling at more than 45km/h over the speed limit while allegedly watching YouTube on his mobile phone in Catherine Field last night.

About 10.40pm (Wednesday 7 November 2018), Highway Patrol officers detected a Mitsubishi Lancer heading south on Camden Valley Way at an alleged speed of 142km/h in an 80km/h zone.

The vehicle was stopped and the 18-year-old man, from Spring Farm, was spoken to by police and produced a P1 licence.

While speaking with the driver, officers noticed his mobile phone in the centre console playing YouTube videos.

The man’s licence was confiscated and suspended on the spot for six months. He received an infringement for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h ($2435 and six demerit points) and using a mobile phone when not permitted ($337 and five demerit points).

The registration plates on his vehicle were removed and have been handed back to the RMS for three months.
