A patchy first three-quarters saw the favourites, Crossfire, down by two points (38-36) with fifteen minutes on the clock in last Saturday’s final of the Charlestown A Grade Netball competition.
The Crossfire girls pulled out all stops in a brilliant last quarter to run out 49-45 winners over a gallant Purnell team which only belatedly made the final courtesy of Watters’ withdrawal from the final series.
A brilliant defensive effort by Crossfire goal keeper, Belinda Alley, was the difference between the two evenly matched sides. Using her extra height, Belinda almost completely shut out the Purnell goal shooters in the final minutes, causing a number of near misses by her rivals who were unable to get under the basket for an easy shot at their target.
The stage is now set for next Saturday’s grand final between the unbeaten minor premiers, Heat and Crossfire, who now have an extra game under their belt and the advantage of playing in a highly competitive final contest.
