Woman charged as investigations continue into toddler’s death in the Hunter region

A woman has been charged over her alleged role in the death of a toddler in the Hunter region two months ago.

About 5.30pm on Tuesday 19 June 2018, emergency services were called to a house at Tarro, near Maitland, following reports a 20-month-old girl was in cardiac arrest.

The child was taken by NSW Ambulance paramedics to John Hunter Hospital, but she could not be revived.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad and Port Stephens Police District established Strike Force Nerium to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death.

A man was arrested and charged last Thursday (2 August 2018). He remains before the courts.

Following further investigations, Strike Force Nerium detectives arrested a 22-year-old woman at a home at Tarro just after 8am today (Friday 10 August 2018).

She was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with manslaughter.

The woman was refused bail to appear via audio visual link at Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 11 August 2018).

Investigations under Strike Force Nerium are continuing.
