Surfest gets a $23,000 boost

The Lake Mac Festival of Surfing has received a huge boost for 2018 with the addition of the richest Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) contest in Australia to the event program, a $23,000 contest featuring three events.

The Lake Mac (FOS), which is also the first event for Surfest 2018, will feature men’s and women’s surfing in a range of SUP divisions, as well as longboard and shortboard events. Off the water, there will be plenty of complementary activities for spectators including markets, free yoga, drumming sessions and skateboarding workshops.

The festival, launched at Redhead Beach this morning, will be held at Redhead on Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21, 2018.

New to the festival program is the inaugural Lake Mac FOS ECS Boards Surf SUP and Paddle Battle, a $23,000 contest featuring three SUP surfing events in men’s, women’s and mixed divisions, and four ocean-racing Paddle Battle events. The Lake Mac Longboard Classic and Lake Mac Shortboard Masters will also be contested.

“The addition of the ECS Boards Surf SUP and Paddle Battle is a real boost for the festival that will bring some of the country’s most elite competitors to Redhead and provide some spectacular surfing,” Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Councillor Kay Fraser said.

“Lake Macquarie is a City with a strong surfing culture and we are proud to be involved with Surfest. It is a festival that brings our communities together, promotes healthy lifestyles and is a fantastic showcase for our region’s beautiful beaches.”

Market stalls will operate from the car park on Saturday and Sunday. Redhead Wellness Centre will conduct free-flow yoga sessions on Saturday morning, while skateboarding will held on Sunday and drumming sessions on both days of the festival.
