Gartelmann Wines was established by Jan and Jorg Gartelmann in the Hunter Valley’s Lovedale region in 1995.
The Gartelmann cellar door, along with the picturesque Deck Café, is located at 701 Lovedale Road in Lovedale and is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and then 10am to 4pm on Sundays.
The region is the idyllic location for making the country’s best Semillon and Shiraz. Progress was slow until Jorg and Jan bought an adjoining property and moved up to the Hunter in January 1998.
By January 1999 they had built a Cellar Door and begun to really focus on the business.
Over recent years, Jorg and Jan have experimented with grapes from regions further afield.
“We have developed great relationships with a number of growers in Mudgee, Rylstone and the higher elevations of Orange,” explained Jorg. “Whilst we are firmly entrenched in the Hunter Valley, we wanted to extend our wine styles with varieties that are making a mark in their respective regions.”
The experiment worked well, with their Gartelmann ‘Joey’ Merlot being awarded the Trophy for the Best Merlot of the Show at the 2015 Orange Wine Show.
This was followed up in 2016, and 2017, with their flagship wine, the 2015 Gartelmann ‘Diedrich’ Shiraz winning the Red Wine of the Show.
The wines are made by Hunter Valley legend Liz Jackson and named in honour of Jorg and Jan’s family members.
“As a family owned and operated business we take great pride in having our family front and centre on our wines,” said Jorg.
